Endometriosis Q & A

What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a chronic medical condition that affects women’s reproductive organs. It occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus, known as endometrial tissue, grows outside the uterus.

This tissue can be found on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, the outer surface of the uterus, and in rare cases, other organs in the abdominal cavity. During the menstrual cycle, all your endometrial tissue responds to hormonal changes by thickening, breaking down, and bleeding.

When this happens in tissue outside of the uterus, the blood cannot exit the body, leading to inflammation, pain, and the formation of scar tissue, also known as adhesions.

What are the signs or symptoms of endometriosis?

Endometriosis can have a significant impact on a woman's health. The most common symptom is pelvic pain, ranging from mild discomfort to severe, debilitating pain during menstruation and at other times during the menstrual cycle. Other symptoms may include:

  • Heavy or irregular periods
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms like bloating or diarrhea
  • Fatigue

In some cases, endometriosis can lead to fertility issues.

When should I see a doctor for endometriosis?

If you experience persistent, severe pelvic pain, heavy or irregular periods, or other concerning symptoms,  seek a medical evaluation promptly. Early diagnosis and management can help alleviate symptoms and potentially improve fertility outcomes.

How do you diagnose endometriosis?

Dr. Preys typically diagnoses endometriosis by using a combination of a review of your medical history, a physical examination, and often, imaging studies like ultrasound or MRI.

A definitive diagnosis often requires a minimally invasive surgical procedure called laparoscopy. Dr. Preys inserts a small camera into the abdomen to visually confirm the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterus.

What treatment options do you offer for endometriosis?

Treatment options for endometriosis depend on the severity of symptoms and a woman’s reproductive goals. Common approaches include pain management with over-the-counter or prescription medications, hormonal therapies to suppress menstruation and endometrial growth, and, in some cases, surgery to remove endometrial tissue and adhesions.

Dr. Preys individualizes your treatment plan for you. Discuss your symptoms and goals with her to determine the most appropriate course of action.
